Project: Flourishing Citizenship

Integrating innovation and social communication tools

T

he Metropolitana company created a new and modern landfill around a place that used to be a dumping ground, which brings a lot of environmental and social advantages to the region since its machines and processes are all created to avoid problems with solid waste.

They needed a Social Communication program to inform people who live in a community nearby the landfill (some that even used to collect stuff in the old dumping ground) of the impact and benefits of its creation.

I’ve created a team with professionals from the environmental management, communication, and design fields. We used Design Thinking and some of its innovative tools to make the communication program more efficient.

We began interviewing key people from the community, understanding how they were living there and how the landfill could impact their lives. Then we got together with the Metropolitana team, to ideate ways to create an impactful program.

The result was the “Flourishing Citizenship” project, an ongoing program created to approximate a community of more than 500 people to a company that has just arrived in the neighborhood.

And over the last few years, we did a lot of interviews, immersion workshops, events, subprograms (like a community garden), educational guided visits to the landfill, and much more. All together with some of the community leaders, helping Metropolitana to get closer from the community, and the community to have more sustainability in their lives.
